Security measures taken by Marwan ibn al-Hakam to gain power
Abstract
The rule of the Umayyads was about to collapse and their affairs were greatly weakened after the death of Muawiyah II, because he did not entrust the caliphate to any of them, and the people differed in the Levant, so he was the first to oppose the commanders of the armies and called for Ibn al-Zubayr al-Nu`man ibn Bashir in Homs and Zafar ibn al-Harith in Qansreen, then he called al-Dahhak ibn Qais in Damascus secretly and then invited them Publicly, the people responded to that and pledged allegiance to him. This reached Ibn Al-Zubayr, so he wrote to Al-Dahhak bin Qais regarding his covenant over the Levant, and when the nation was about to gather on Ibn Al-Zubayr, Marwan bin Al-Hakam decided to pledge allegiance to him due to what he saw of the people’s consensus on him. As security for the Umayyads, Amr bin Saeed bin Al-Aas went out with him.
